British Honorary Consulate
Vacancy for Pro-Consul (Bali)
(CLOSING DATE 11 June 2010)
The British Embassy invites applications for the position of Pro-Consul at the British Honorary Consulate in Sanur, Bali, to start work in July 2010. This is a challenging and rewarding front-line position.
Over 120,000 British tourists visit Bali every year on holiday. There is also an increasing number of British people who decide to settle permanently in Bali. Some of these British nationals in Bali encounter a wide range of difficulties including theft, loss of travel documents, arrest, financial problems, business disputes, child custody problems, serious illness and even death.
Previous consular experience is not essential but you will be expected to absorb and enforce best practice quickly. Candidates with a strong track record in public service delivery will have an advantage. A general understanding of legal issues and other resource-related skills would also be useful. More generally, the job requires good self-management and time management skills; good networking skills: the candidate will be expected to maintain excellent working relationships with the local Balinese authorities (Immigration, Police, Prison, Hospitals, Undertakers, etc.) as well as work closely with other diplomatic missions in times of crisis. It is essential that the successful candidate is self-confident, persuasive and articulate. Although the British Embassy promotes a healthy work-life balance, consular staff are often called on after hours to deal with emergencies and the successful candidate therefore needs to be a reliable and flexible person.
The Pro-Consul will also be expected to support the Honorary Consul by managing the Bali office on a day to day basis, ensuring that operations run smoothly. He/she will handle consular casework and public enquiries with the help of a Consular Assistant. The Pro-Consul in Bali will be line-managed by the Consul in Jakarta.

Basic Requirements:
  • Excellent people and communication skills.
  • Excellent spoken and written English (IELTS level 6.5 or equivalent).
  • Proficiency in good conversational Indonesian.
  • Expertise in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel and databases.
The successful candidate will be required to undertake a month of paid training in the United Kingdom before taking up the position.
We will be offering a competitive package of benefits. The salary offered will depend on the skills and experience of the successful candidate but will be no less than Rp. 9,5 million per calendar month plus bonuses.
If you are interested, please send your CV, salary history and a summary of why you are suitable by Post to:
JakartaJob.Applications@fco.gov.uk no later than 4pm Friday, 11 June 2010.
Please note that all applications not sent to email address above will not be taken into consideration. Only successful applicants will be contacted. Previous applicants need not apply. The position is subject to achieving the necessary level of security clearance.
